We aim to produce an air of expansiveness as one room or level flows into another. Circulation doesn’t need to be secondary: the visual connections between spaces can be as important as the spaces themselves.
Archways and colonnades connect, yet still provide definition between spaces, like these designs in Burlingame (upper left) or Sonoma (upper middle). Stairs can invite you to go up to a newly constructed level (SF, lower left). They can lead down to a family room (SF, lower right) or master bedroom suite (SF, upper right) that were once under-utilized basements. They can also be dramatic, like this stairway connecting former flats into a new three-story home (SF, upper middle).
